For me, apples and cinnamon are the embodiment of fall – along with Taylor’s “autumn leaves falling like pieces into place”, pumpkin spice and cozy layers.

All this to say that a fragrant apple crumble is the perfect seasonal dessert – warm, comforting, cinnamon-scented and oh-so-easy to throw together.

I am sharing an Air Fryer apple crumble recipe today, since my air fryer has practically replaced my oven in all but a handful of bakes lately – BTW, have you checked out my Easy Air Fryer Bakes book yet? 😉

Apple Crumble Ingredients

I am listing the ingredients for a classic apple crumble below, but the good news is you can play around with the fillings to give this simple recipe your own personal twist.

FOR THE FILLING

  • Apples – I use Pink Lady, Fuji or Granny Smith apples in my crumble. We want a crisp apple that keeps its shape when baked. Having said that you can try any apple variety you like, or combine different ones.
  • Lemon juice – balances the sweetness in the crumble and prevents the apples from browning while you prep your ingredients.
  • The spices – ground cinnamon, cloves and freshly grated nutmeg.
  • You will also need – butter, a little water and cornstarch to thicken the filling.

FOR THE CRUMBLE TOPPING

  • Flour – all purpose flour with a pinch baking powder.
  • Sugar – light brown sugar in the crumble and Demerara sugar to sprinkle on top for extra crunch!
  • Butter – cold unsalted butter is the key to a good crumble.
  • Oats – not essential but I love the addition of a few tablespoons of rolled oats (take a look at my healthier Apple Crumble with Oat Topping recipe).
  • Cinnamon and salt

PREPARE THE APPLE FILLING Peel and dice the apples into even bite-sized pieces. Place in a saucepan with the lemon juice, water, butter, granulated sugar and spices. Cook over low heat, stirring, for 6–10 minutes or until the apples have softened slightly.

Stir in the cornstarch and heat through until the apple filling thickens. Transfer to a greased 8 – 9 inch pie dish – but please check the dish fits into your air fryer first!

Variations and Recipe Notes

FOR A VEGAN APPLE CRUMBLE: replace the butter with a good-quality plant based alternative, like a block vegan butter.

VARIATIONS: replace some of the apples in the filling with other fruit such as plums, pears or blackberries. I sometimes add a dollop of salted caramel sauce for good measure as well. You can also add chopped nuts such as pecans in the topping.

MAKE INDIVIDUAL SERVINGS: divide the filling between greased ramekins, add the topping and air fry for about 15 minutes or until golden.

CAN I MAKE THIS IN AN OVEN? You can bake the crumble in the oven, no problem! Cook for 40-45 minutes in a 350°F (180°C) preheated oven. Place the pie dish on a baking sheet in case the filling bubbles through.
