Some recipes look and taste amazing yet are deceptively easy to prepare! This simple chocolate pudding is such a recipe – it takes minutes to throw together and yet tastes incredible!
It’s the perfect alternative to traditional Christmas pudding – a rich and indulgent way to round off your festive feast.
What’s more you can slow cook your steamed chocolate pudding in a crockpot (or a pot) so that is is ready when your meal is done.
Melt-in-the-middle Chocolate Pudding
You know how much I love Chocolate Lava Cakes, right? This easy chocolate pudding has the same melt-in-the-middle chocolate centre but is child’s play to prepare.
I tweaked Mary Berry’s Chocolate Pudding recipe, hiding chocolate truffles in the batter to create the molten centre!
I used Lindt truffles but you can use any type – Baileys Salted Caramel truffles being another fave!
The pudding looks very modest when turned out but is transformed into a showstopper when you pour the velvety chocolate sauce all over!
HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE PUDDING

STEP 1 Grease a 2 pint pudding basin (or small glass bowl) and place a small piece of baking paper in the centre.
STEP 2 Add all the pudding ingredients to a bowl and beat together until you have a smooth batter.
STEP 3 Spoon half into the prepared bowl and add 4-5 chocolate truffles in the middle. Cover with remaining batter and level.
STEP 4 Cut a square piece of parchment paper and another of foil, make a pleat in the middle and cover the bowl, securing with an elastic band.
STEP 5 Put a jam jar lid (or trivet) in the base of your slow cooker and place the pudding on top. Add boiling water to come halfway up the bowl. Cover and cook on high for approximately 3- 3 1/2 hours or until the pudding feels firm to the touch. Keep warm.
STEP 6 Heat the chocolate chips and cream, stirring, until you have a smooth chocolate sauce. If the sauce is too thick you can add a little more cream or milk. Stir in the Baileys and vanilla extract.
STEP 7 Carefully turn the pudding out of the bowl and serve warm, drizzled with the chocolate sauce.
Can I steam my Choc pudding on the stove?
Yes you can simply steam it in a deep pot for 90 minutes. Add enough hot water to come halfway up the pudding basin, over the pot, bring to the boil then simmer for 90 minutes or until pudding feels firm to the touch.
Can I bake this chocolate pudding?
Although technically you could bake this pudding it won’t have the lovely soft steamed pudding texture – you will just end up with a small chocolate cake!
Customise your pudding
You can add spices, orange zest, or different flavour truffles to make this recipe your own. I adore it as a chocolate orange pudding, using chocolate orange truffles and Terry’s chocolate orange in the sauce!

For the pudding
- 125 g (½ cup + 1 tbsp) softened butter unsalted
- 125 (scant ⅔ cup) sugar golden caster preferably
- 100 g (scant 1 cup) self raising flour
- 4 tbsp cocoa powder unsweetened
- 2 tsp instant coffee , optional
- 2 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla bean paste or extract
To fill
- 4-5 chocolate truffles plus extra to decorate
Chocolate sauce
- 150 g (1 cup) dark chocolate chips
- 120 ml (½ cup) cream, single /pouring
- 1 tsp vanilla bean paste or extract
- 1-2 tbsp Baileys or other liqueur (optional)
Instructions
Make the pudding
- Grease a 2 pint pudding basin (or small glass bowl) and place a small piece of baking paper in the centre.
- Add all the pudding ingredients to a bowl and beat together until you have a smooth batter.
- Spoon half into the prepared bowl and add 4-5 chocolate truffles in the middle.
- Cover with remaining batter and level.
- Cut a square piece of foil, make a pleat in the middle and cover the bowl, securing with an elastic band. Fashion a handle with string so you can lift the pudding easily.
- Put a jam jar lid in the base of your slow cooker and place the pudding on top.
- Add boiling water to the slow cooker to come halfway up the bowl. Cover and cook on high for 90 minutes or until the pudding feels firm to the touch. Keep warm.

- Heat the chocolate chips and cream, stirring, until you have a smooth chocolate sauce. If the sauce is too thick you can add a little more cream or milk. Stir in the Baileys and vanilla extract.
