This delicious Air Fryer Soda Bread uses just three Ingredients, no yeast, and is incredibly easy to make! There’s no kneading, no waiting and you don’t need any special equipment. Delicious spread with butter and jam and a great served with cheese!

Remember those days, back in 2019-2020, when ingredients were hard to find and we were all on a mission to bake? I recall my 3-ingredient banana bread being very popular back then!
Thankfully, knock on wood, ingredients are now accessible, but baking a bread that requires just three ingredients still sounds awesome, does it not?
Well this 3-ingredient bread is technically a soda bread – an air fryer soda bread to be exact (although you can, of course, also bake it in your oven).
It has a crisp and crunchy crust and a dense soft cake-like crumb. You can make the dough in under five minutes and since the bread contains no yeast there’s no waiting for the dough to rise.

Air Fryer Soda Bread Ingredients
You just need self-raising flour (a.k.a self-rising flour), sugar and buttermilk to make this three ingredient no knead bread. Boom! That is it!
If don’t have self-raising flour, you can use all purpose flour instead but you will also need to add baking soda and salt, bringing the ingredients total to four. 🙂
You can replace the buttermilk with kefir or with Greek yogurt with additional lemon juice. Unlike my yeasted air fryer bread recipe, It is the acidity of the buttermilk reacting with the baking soda that helps the loaf rise so make sure the self-rising flour is fresh.

How to make Air Fryer Soda Bread
Full measurements and instructions can be found on the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page. Please take a look at the steps and video before attempting this recipe!
- Add the flour and sugar into a mixing bowl and stir to combine. Pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients and stir well until you have a shaggy dough.
- Cover the bowl with a damp kitchen towel for a few minutes then stir again, or use oiled hands, to bring the dough together. Do not overwork the dough – handle it as little as possible!

- Tip the dough onto your worktop and gather into a ball to form a round loaf. Place on a piece of parchment paper or a silicone liner and use a sharp knife to score a deep cross on top of the loaf.

- Place into the basket of a preheated air fryer and bake at 180°C (360°F) for 25 minutes. Flip the dough over so you can brown the underside and bake for a further 15-20 minutes or until the bread registers 93–96°C (200–205°F) on a digital thermometer.

- Take the basket out of the fryer but leave the bread in. Cover with a damp tea towel and rest for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool before slicing and serving. This bread is delicious served with salted butter and cheese or as a side to soups and stews.

Recipe Notes
- Oven Baking Instructions: preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Bake the bread for 34-40 minutes, or until golden brown. A toothpick inserted in the thickest part should come out clean.
- Store the bread in an airtight container or a bread bag at room temperature for 2-3 days. This bread can go stale relatively quickly so it is best served toasted. You can freeze the sliced bread for up to three months and toast it straight from frozen.
- The bread needs sufficient space to rise so check your air fryer basket is tall enough to allow this. You may need to remove the rack if your model has a removable one like my Instant Vortex air fryer.
- Keep in mind that the bread can look perfectly baked halfway through cooking if you are baking in an air fryer due to the top heat. Do not be fooled by this – always to a toothpick test or check using an instant-read thermometer.

I used 30% self raising flour with the white SR flour. Didn’t turn out as well as using all white. Now trying it again with less wholemeal. Will let you know how it turns out.
3 ingredient bread very easy to make. Crust was quite hard but on cutting slices turned out fine. Would like to know if I can use wholemeal flour instead of white?
Will make this frequently as few ingredients which I like to make for my small grandchildren.
Hi Shirley – yes you can but I would use maybe 30% wholemeal and 70% white as all wholemeal may be quite dense
Thankyou. I thought of using less whole meal as used to do that in my bread oven using 1/4 whole meal and 3/4 white bread flour. Air fryer so much easier and able to use ordinary self raising flour which I always have in cupboard. Thankyou for prompt reply.
Shirley mac
Really hard. Followed recipe exactly. What a waste of ingredients. 😞
Hi Jenny – soda bread has a hard crust as it is a quick bread. If you want to create a softer crust you will need to bake my yeasted Air Fryer Bread
Thank you. Will try that one 🥰
When you remove the loaf from the airfryer, cover with a clean dry teatowel and allow to cool on a wire rack. Slice when cool.
Also do not add sugar unless you want a sweet loaf.
