What is Toad in the Hole?
Toad in the Hole is a classic British recipe with a whimsical name that for sure will confuse anyone not familiar with British cuisine!
This simple recipe is basically a giant Yorkshire pudding with pork sausages cooked right in the batter. The batter puffs up around the sausages into a golden crisp cloud and this is then served with lashings of gravy. Drool!
Can You make Toad in the hole in the Air Fryer?
Usually you make Toad In the Hole in a large pan. First you cook the sausages in a little oil. Once they are partially cooked and the pan is hot you pour in the Yorkshire pudding batter.
Making an air fryer Toad in the Hole is easy, arguably easier than the oven baked version. After some experimenting I decided that I had to make a few tweaks to the classic method. Let me walk you through it!
Toad In the Hole Ingredients
You need just FIVE ingredients to make this filling dish – it’s quite frugal and generally beloved by everyone.
- Sausages – usually pork Cumberland sausages but you can experiment with different types
- Vegetable baking fat or vegetable oil
- Flour – plain / all purpose
- Eggs
- Milk
For the gravy
Toad in the hole is usually served with onion gravy which is easy to make with a handful of ingredients. Alternatively you can use a gravy stockpot or
- Butter
- Red onion
- Flour
- Beef broth or stock made from a cube
- Worcestershire sauce
Useful equipment
I used my Cosori Air Fryer for this recipe. I tried several different types of muffin and cake pans to see what worked best and in the end these mini pans (4 inch cake tins) were the winners!
We will be making an individual serving mini Toad In the Hole(s) in the air fryer. This means more crispy edges and no soggy bits so it’s all good!
You will need to cook the Toad in the Hole in batches. If you need to reheat them simply blast them for a couple of minutes in the air fryer at 350°F (180°C).
How To Make Toad In The Hole

Make the Yorkshire Pudding Batter
Add the flour to a mixing bowl. Crack the eggs into the bowl, add a splash of the milk and use a balloon whisk to whisk together.
Start mixing in the middle of the bowl, slowly incorporating the flour into the eggs and milk. Gradually add the remaining milk and mix until you have a smooth batter. Rest the batter for 30 minutes or overnight in the refrigerator.
If you have an immersion blender you can add all the ingredients into a tall measuring jug and simply blitz until the batter is smooth.
Make the gravy
Add butter to a saucepan and stir in the onion once it starts foaming. Add a pinch of salt and sugar and cook, stirring, over low heat for about 10 minutes or until the onions have softened.
Sprinkle with the flour and gradually stir in the hot beef stock. Add the Worcestershire sauce and simmer for a few minutes until the gravy has thickened. Have a taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
Cook the sausages
Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes. Add the sausages into a silicone liner (or in a cake pan / directly into the air fryer) and cook for 10 minutes at 350°F (180°C). Slice the sausages into three pieces.
Make the Toad in the Hole
Place the cake tins in the air fryer and add a little vegetable oil or solid baking fat such as Trex. Preheat for 3 minutes at 400°F (200°C).
Add 3-4 sausage pieces into each cake tins and pour the batter over them to come halfway up. Air Fry for 12-15 minutes, or until the batter is golden and crisp at the edges.
Serve and enjoy!
Serve two mini toad-in-the-hole per person with a good drizzle of the gravy and some peas, green beans and /or mashed potatoes. Pure comfort!

Ingredients
Onion gravy
- 2 tbsp butter , unsalted
- 1 red onion , sliced thinly
- pinch salt
- pinch sugar
- 2 tbsp flour
- 480 ml (2 cups) beef stock use a beef stock cube
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Toad In the Hole
- 130 g (½ cup) flour plain / all-purpose
- 3 large eggs
- 240 ml (1 cup) milk semi-skimmed
- 8 pork sausages
- 6 tsp vegetable baking fat or vegetable oil, as needed
