BRIE AND CRANBERRY PIGS IN BLANKETS INGREDIENTS
Plump pork sausages are at the heart of this easy appetizer recipe. Smaller / thinner ones such as chipolatas (we used Jolly Hog chipolatas). You could also try this with chicken or turkey sausages for a bit of variety.
Whole cranberry sauce is essential for this seasonal favorite, adding sweet bursts and texture that cranberry jelly just can’t match. Shop around to find out what’s available but during the holiday season there are usually several options on the shelves.
Brie gives these pigs in blankets a nice cheesy taste without being overwhelming and is a classic complement to the cranberry sauce.
Streaky bacon is essential, adding a layer of slightly crispy and salty flavor to every bite.
HOW TO MAKE PIGS IN BLANKETS WITH BRIE AND CRANBERRY
Full measurements and instructions can be found on the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page. Please take a look at the steps and video before attempting this recipe!
STEP 1 Cut your wheel of brie into small strips. You can trim the rind if you like or leave it on – up to you.
STEP 2 Slice each sausage lengthwise without cutting all the way through. You just want to create space for the cheese and cranberry sauce filling.
STEP 3 Place a spoonful of cranberry sauce into the sausage, filling the gap.
STEP 4 Place one strip of brie lengthwise on top of the cranberry sauce in each sausage.
STEP 5 Wrap each sausage in a strip of bacon. If the bacon won’t stay on you can secure it using toothpicks.
STEP 6 Combine the whole cranberry sauce and wholegrain mustard for the dipping sauce in a saucepan. Heat for a couple of minutes until runny. You can use this to glaze the sausages during the last minute of cooking time but it’s not essential.
STEP 7 Place a batch of prepared pigs in blankets in the air fryer basket in a single layer, leaving a bit of space around each one. No piece of parchment paper or air fryer liner is required. Bake for 12-15 mins at 180°C, turning them at the halfway point.
Cooking time may vary depending on how hot your air fryer runs, so keep an eye on them until they are golden brown. The sausage meat needs to be cooked through and you’ll want the crispy bacon to add texture to each delicious bite.
STEP 8 Once they are well cooked, leave them to cool on a wire rack. Remember: the smell of air fryer bacon can be hugely tempting but there little piggies are very hot when them come out of the air fryer, so give them a minute or you risk burning your mouth!
STORING AIR FRYER PIGS IN BLANKETS
If you manage to have any leftover pigs in blankets, storing them is easy. Just put them in an airtight container and they will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days. The best part? You can also reheat them in your air fryer, just cook them for 5 mins at 180°C.
RECIPE TIPS & FAQS
Are pigs in blankets only for Christmas?
Absolutely not! While this easy pigs in blankets air fryer recipe might be popular over Christmas or for a New Year celebration, it isn’t limited to any particular event. It’s also a popular snack for pretty much any big gathering.
It’s likely to be just as enjoyed at a birthday party as it is on game day, served with your favorite dipping sauces. We’re suggesting cranberry and mustard, but you could also serve it with a nice cheese sauce, or rich and tangy barbecue sauce (or even with maple syrup if you want something a little different!).
Where are pigs in blankets most popular?
This is basically a recipe that is specific to the UK, though other countries have some variations. For example, there are hot dogs or cocktail sausages baked in croissant dough, also known as sausage rolls or crescent dogs.
But this is the classic appetizer with sausages wrapped in bacon, and doesn’t require any crescent roll dough or puff pastry.
In the United States, there are also “lil smokies” on offer which could offer an interesting alternative option. These are classic cocktail sausages/cocktail weenies with an extra smokey flafor, which you could use as the base in this simple recipe.
