You guys know how much I love my air fryer, but I have fallen for it even harder this summer. We just came back from our Greek holiday where it was so incredibly hot that cooking was the last thing anyone wanted to do.

Using an air fryer was a true life saver, with meals cooking quicker without the oven heating up the kitchen even further (it was already unbearably hot).

My mum’s Greek roast chicken with lemon potatoes is legendary and – GASP! – it’s even tastier in the air fryer. The chicken juices drip down over the potatoes making them totally irresistible, with crispy edges and soft soft insides.

Everything cooks together creating a great family meal in under an hour – just add a Greek Salad and you have an easy, speedy feast that requires very little prep.

Of course you can also cook a whole chicken without the potatoes using the same method if you would rather serve it over mashed potatoes or for use in salads.

Air Fryer Whole Chicken Grocery List

  • CHICKEN: Make sure that your whole chicken fits in your air fryer. My Cosori Air Fryer can easily accommodate a 3-4 pound chicken but anything larger would be a struggle.
  • OLIVE OIL: Can’t have Greek chicken without olive oil! You can use a spray bottle if you want to use the oil sparingly.
  • POTATOES: Use golden potatoes or any type that is suitable for roasting.
  • SEASONING: Chicken stock cube or bouillon powder, garlic powder, dried oregano, salt, pepper, paprika, rosemary and thyme.
  • AND FINALLY: Lemon wedges, garlic cloves.

How to Make Air Fryer Whole Chicken

Combine all the ingredients for the seasoning – you will be using it on the potatoes and the chicken.

Cut the potatoes into evenly sized wedges. I leave the peel on but you can peel them first if preferred. Add the potatoes to the air fryer and drizzle with olive oil. Season liberally and toss to combine.

Place the chicken over the potatoes, drizzle or mist with olive oil and season generously on both sides. Add a small lemon wedge, a rosemary sprig and the garlic cloves in the cavity. Place the chicken breast side down over the potatoes.

Cook for 15 minutes at 400°F (200°C). Flip the chicken over so it is breast side up. Try to move the potato wedges to the side of the chicken so that they cook evenly.

Air fry for a further 40-45 minutes at 350°F (180°C) checking the internal temperature with a meat thermometer after a total cooking time of 50 minutes. Once it registers 165°F / 75°C then it is ready. Remove from the air fryer onto a platter and rest for 5 minutes.

Check the potatoes are all cooked through – a knife should pierce them easily. If some potatoes are still a little hard you can cook for a further 5-10 minutes. Squeeze the lemon wedge that’s been cooking with the chicken over the potatoes.

Serve with the potato wedges with a Greek salad to round off your meal.

RECIPE TIPS FOR ROASTING A WHOLE CHICKEN IN AIR FRYER

  • Tuck the wing tips under to prevent them from burning. If the chicken is too large it may scorch at the top so make sure you pick one that fits into your air fryer.
  • Store any leftovers in an air tight container for up to three days or use the chicken carcass and any leftover meat to make soup.
  • If you would prefer to oven roast the chicken follow this recipe.

How long should you cook chicken in air fryer?

This will depend on the size and weight of the chicken and your air fryer model. A meat thermometer is highly recommended for air fryer chicken perfection. That way you always know when the chicken is safely cooked through yet still juicy.
