My husband and I were having a lively debate about our fave takeout dishes recently. We agreed to disagree on the merits of various dishes, but we were both 100% behind shrimp dishes topping our lists.
This simple honey garlic shrimp recipe is my personal twist on a well-loved Chinese dish. The best part is that you can prepare this meal in about 10 minutes right in your kitchen, and it tastes just as good – if not better – than what you would find at a restaurant.
You can’t go wrong with succulent jumbo shrimp in a sweet, sticky honey glaze with a hint of heat (hot honey shrimp anyone?). It’s such a delicious dish whether you enjoy it as a starter or main.
And as with most shrimp dishes, this Asian-inspired recipe cooks incredibly quickly and uses just a handful of ingredients.

Honey Garlic Shrimp Ingredients
Since this recipe cooks in 10 minutes or less you must have all the ingredients prepped and ready to go before you start. Let’s break down the key elements of this easy speedy shrimp recipe.
- Shrimp – or prawns if you are in the UK or Australia. Choose the largest (jumbo) shrimp or prawns you can afford as they are the main ingredient in this recipe. By the way, shrimp and prawns look very similar and the two names are used almost interchangeably. Fact junkies will be quick to tell you that these are actually two different types of crustaceans!
- Salt, paprika, garlic powder and cornstarch (cornflour) for seasoning the shrimp. The cornstarch helps keep the shrimp succulent and tender while stir frying while also adding a crispiness (win-win).
- Honey – adds the sweet and sticky element in our sauce, coating the shrimp and creating the irresistible sauce. Be careful not to use too much honey though – the sweetness can easily overwhelm this dish.
- Garlic – there’s a lot of freshly minced garlic cloves in this recipe yet it doesn’t taste too garlicky.
- Ginger – garlic and ginger go hand-in-hand in many Asian recipes. Make sure to use fresh ginger root and not a jarred ginger paste or ground ginger – the flavor is not nearly as intense.
- Soy sauce – light soy sauce brings the salty back into our sweet and sticky honey sauce, balancing out the flavors. You can use Tamari if you have a gluten sensitivity.
- Unsalted butter – a little butter enriches the sauce adding a rich buttery taste and luxurious touch.
- You will also need – vegetable oil for searing the shrimp, fresh chives for a touch of green and red pepper flakes for a bit of heat. I like to also add a bit of lime zest and juice for a note of zesty acidity.

How to make Honey Garlic Shrimp
Full measurements and instructions can be found on the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page. Please take a look at the steps and video before attempting this recipe!
- Thaw the shrimp under cold running water if you are using frozen shrimp. Pat dry using paper towels and place in a bowl. Add the salt, paprika, garlic powder and cornstarch and toss together to coat the shrimp.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet, add the shrimp and cook for about a minute per side, until they turn pink. Be careful not to overcook the shrimp as they can become a bit rubbery and lose their subtle flavor. Set them aside in a bowl as soon as they turn pink – we will be adding them back into the sauce soon.
- Add the minced garlic and ginger to the skillet – you do not need to clean it first. Cook over medium heat for 30 seconds or so until fragrant. Stir in the soy sauce and honey and bring to a simmer.
- Stir in the butter and add the shrimp back into the pan as soon as it melts. You just want to coat the shrimp in the sauce and warm them through.
- Garnish with lime zest, chopped chives and a little lime juice if you like. Serve over rice with a side of green beans, snap peas or broccoli for a quick dinner that’s hard to beat!!

Recipe Tips and Notes
- You can serve these honey garlic shrimp (honey garlic prawns) as a starter or appetizer… but make sure to make enough if you are serving a crowd as they are bound to be incredibly popular!
- Turn the dish into a proper stir fry by adding vegetables such as peppers, broccoli, snow peas, corn and so on.
- SERVING SUGGESTIONS You can’t go wrong serving the shrimp over rice with the sticky sauce spooned over. Noodles would also work in a pinch!
- STORING AND FREEZING This dish tastes best when freshly made and it is so quick and easy that there’s no real reason to freeze it. Leftovers will keep for up to three days in an airtight container. Reheat on the stove, adding a little water if needed.
