I have reviewed quite a few products and services on this blog, but few more appealing than Gousto – a company that provides recipe-tailored ingredients that allow you to cook meals from scratch. Gousto provides a few different recipe choices each week – meat, fish and vegetarian options– and customers can select which ones they wish to order. A Gousto box is then delivered to your door with all the ingredients required (clearly labelled as well as measured) and foolproof recipe cards with step-by-step instructions.
Although I had no choice in the recipes I was sent to review, the options (Sticky Hoisin Pork and Waldorf-style Salad) were both interesting and very tasty. I was most impressed with the quality and freshness of the ingredients and having everything measured really cut down on prep time. The Hoisin Pork was a very satisfying meal – although I served mine with noodles rather than the provided potatoes (for spicy wedges) which seemed out of step with the Asian-style flavours. The sort-of Waldorf salad was both filling and healthy – and a recipe I have recreated again.
I can really see the appeal of Gousto if you are a busy professional with no time to shop or someone who loves cooking but has a very limited repertoire. There’s no wastage, no running to the corner shop for that elusive forgotten ingredient and no guess work. The prices seem fairly reasonable especially given the quality of the ingredients (from under £4 per meal) and the website is beautifully presented and easy to navigate. For me the biggest draw would be the recipes which are varied and offer really interesting options to spice up a boring midweek dinner. I have to admit that I can’t really see Gousto working for families with young children however – most recipes would probably be rejected by fussy eaters.
If you would like to give Gousto a try, you can get £20 off your first box – better than half price! – simply by using this code SUPERGOLDENBAKES20. Let me know what you think if you try it.
I was sent a free Gousto box for purposes of this review. All opinions are my own.
