I have been asked at two separate events recently ‘what drives traffic to your blog’? While the answer to this question is fluid, lately it has been Pinterest with Google being a surprise second. And what drives traffic from Pinterest back to a blog? Interesting images (always vertical – landscape images do not ‘pin’ well), easy recipes and mouthwatering descriptions. Sometimes the success behind a Pinterest sensation is completely arbitrary – my most pinned image is one of my least favourite food shots but clearly the recipe has captured people’s attention!
The reason I am going on and on about this, is that I visit your blogs every week and I see most of you are making use of the Alt Text description on your images. But for those (few) of you that don’t, Alt Text is crucial because it helps your images be visible to search engines and provides that all-important Pinterest description (rather than ‘image 4’ or, worse still, a sequence of numbers). In Blogger than Alt Text is under ‘Properties’ when you click on any of your images. In WordPress you can add alt text to your images as you upload them into your media gallery.
Another thing (that helped me enormously) is to figure out what your blog’s maximum image width is – it will be determined by your template or theme. Save your images that pixel width (in my case 650 pixels wide) thereby ensuring your images are displayed as big as possible for greater impact.
But enough of my blogging tips – sure I am preaching to the choir! Let’s take a look at this week’s delectable links…
1. Scotch girdle scones anyone? I have never made any myself but after seeing this recipe from Alexandra I really want to give them a go.
2. Take apples and stuff them with cream cheese and nuts. Bake. Drool. Winnie’s blog is full with amazing creations!
3. Courgette lemon bundt cake – that surely counts as one of your 5-a-day. From Kirsten of Pink Rose Bakery.
4. Let’s all pretend we just turned 3 just so we can indulge in this pink triple layer strawberry confection of a cake from Lucy.
