In those long-ago days BC (= Before Children) Selfridges used to be my absolute favourite spot for a bit of shopping – always with reviving lunch at one of the many restaurants in-store and ending with a leisurely browse at the Food Hall. Back then I was way more excited by a beautiful – and completely impractical – pair of shoes than a gorgeous cake. Post children, I can’t say I hang out at Selfridges nearly as much as I would like which is why an invitation for breakfast at Le Chalet restaurant followed by a little Christmas Hamper sampling comes as a very welcome surprise.
We are there early and led to Le Chalet (located on the top floor) through a narrow hallway glittering with festive lights. It is an enchaningly beautiful, fairytale entrance to the bright and very cosy restaurant. There’s soft woolen throws on each chair, more festive lights, the best flat white I’ve had in a long while and beautiful views of London. Basically I want to move in – and that’s before I have even sampled the breakfast nibbles – bashed avocado on toast and delicious waffles with caramelised bananas. I am treating myself to a proper lunch there (and maybe a little shopping) as soon as humanly possible.
