Among the amazing food and drink on offer at Food Blogger Connect this year was goodbeans cold brew coffee. I had never tried cold brew coffee before and I LOVED it. This coffee is made by soaking coarse-ground beans in water for a long time (12 hours or longer) and then filtered. It tastes absolutely sensational – especially in this weather, over ice. I hope goodbeans grow their business enough for their products to become widely available. In the meantime I might experiment with making my own cold brew at home.
The first thought I had when I tasted cold brew was ‘this would be great in a cocktail’ – and it absolutely does. Which brings me to the latest twisted Cocktail Friday – the Long Island Iced Coffee. This is the kind of cocktail that should probably come with a health warning. It is extremely refreshing and very, very potent. Unlike the Long Island Iced Tea, which contains no actual tea in it, this contains coffee so remember that if consuming this late at night. If you can’t find (or make) any cold brew coffee by all means substitute with cola but leave out the ginger beer.
But before I leave you I am going to share this quote from the Gilmore Girls:
“Someday, when you’re a little older, you will be introduced to something that is extremely seductive but fickle. A fair-weather friend who seems benign but packs a wallop like a donkey kick, and that is the Long Island Iced Tea. It makes you do things that you normally wouldn’t do, like lifting your skirt in public or calling someone you normally wouldn’t call at really weird times.”
Heed Lorelai’s words, drink responsibly and please don’t lift your skirt in public.
- 1 tbsp dark rum
- 1 tbsp vodka
- 1 tbsp gin
- 1 tbsp Patrón XO Cafe Tequila can substitute with gold tequila
- 1 tbsp Tia Maria
- 2 tbsp ginger beer
- 1-2 tbsp lime juice
- Cold brew coffee to top up
- Lime wedges to serve
- Half fill a tall glass with ice.
- Fill a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice and add all the spirits and the lime juice. Shake briefly.
- Strain over the ice in the glass. Add the ginger beer and cold brew to top up and stir.
- Garnish with lime wedges and serve.
Taste this for sweetness - without the cola it may need a tablespoon of simple syrup if you prefer it a little sweet.
